Who we are

Research at the service of strategy

IRIS Institute is an independent Malaysian think-tank focused on national power, geopolitics and strategic research. Founded in 2015 in Bandar Baru Bangi, it produces analysis for policymakers, scholars and leaders across the Islamic world.

Our work sits between academic rigour and policy relevance: every output is written to be read and used by the people who make decisions.

Our research approach

Strategic Monitoring

Observing trends in strategic developments and their implications for both national and global interests through our integrated monitoring method. This encompasses open-source and actor monitoring systems, and the analysis of statistical and strategic reports. IRIS is committed to producing insights on significant geopolitical megatrends through our publications: news summaries (RADAR), periodic reports (LANDSKAP), strategic reports and our online portal (FOKUS+).

Strategic Dialogue

Facilitating a series of dialogues that encourage the exchange of ideas and inspiration among Muslim world leaders, national strategic stakeholders, key industry players and civil organisations. IRIS holds that the best solutions for addressing challenges and fostering innovative ideas on national power come from collaboration and cooperation. Our National Power Dialogue serves as the primary platform for strategic discussion, revolving around the themes of national power, national development through its resources, and national challenges.

Conducting in-depth, interdisciplinary research within a strategically developed framework driven by the national interest and its potential. IRIS believes that formulating the fundamental development of national resources can steer national power in the global landscape. Our research is conducted through integrated methodologies, either field research with empirical evidence or conceptual discourse and analysis, in collaboration with fellow scholars and experts. IRIS is committed to publishing its findings through books, a peer-reviewed journal (IJISTRA), and strategic presentations and sharing sessions with stakeholders and targeted audiences.

Strategic Conference

Organising a periodic international conference that builds mutual understanding of the importance of sharing knowledge and research among scholars, experts and the academic community. Our International Conference on Interdisciplinary and Strategic Studies (ICRIS) and its published proceedings bring together leading scholars and fellow researchers, and provide an intellectual platform for them. IRIS believes that the core of strategic research is the development and dissemination of a more comprehensive and precise body of knowledge, informed by empirical evidence from the real world.
